What is the Future Steps Challenge?

Future Steps is a 10,000-steps-a-day challenge, taking place throughout February 2022. Prince’s Trust supporters across the UK, will be downloading our Future Steps App to track their steps and fundraise to support young people. Take part individually, or as a team of up to 6, either way – it’s time to step to it, have some fun, get fit and change young lives! 

This year, take care of your mental and physical health, and raise funds to help the most vulnerable young people in the UK take the next step to transform their lives. If you’re an individual stepper there is a fundraising target of £100 whilst you step to success, or £250 as a team.  

When completing your challenge, remember to follow the latest government guidelines.

How long is Future Steps?

Future Steps is a four-week challenge, starting on 1st February and ending on 28th February 2022 – totally doable right? You can sign up to take on the challenge at any time until the end of February and help young people across the UK take their future steps.

How do we track our steps?

You’re going to need a pedometer - you can use your Fitbit, Apple Health or Google Fit. Then all you need to do is link your pedometer with our Future Steps App, so you can see how many steps you or your team have done – mind blown! You can also submit steps manually and convert your walk, run or wheelchair distance to steps. The Future Steps App is available to download via the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Can I change my tracker?

You can change your step tracking method once you have registered for the event in the app settings.  

Can I add steps at a later stage?

Hold up - if you’ve synced the Future Steps app with your Fitbit, Apple Health or Google Fit, your steps are automatically updated to the app.  

We are all about seizing the day at The Prince’s Trust, so we recommend that once each day ends, the steps from that day are logged. When February begins make sure to log your steps as you go along and check the app to see how your teammates are getting on. The leaderboard is live, so you can track the competition. Please do note, the app will close at midnight on the last day of February. 

What happens if I am ill in February?

If someone is ill or cannot take part, please email futuresteps@princes-trust.org.uk and we will submit a daily average of steps for up to three days. However, if a team member misses more than three days, their average cannot be used and the total steps for the fourth day (and further missed days) will be zero.

This all sounds very formal – but we know there are lots of competitive steppers out there that don’t want to let their fellow team members down! Maybe if you have a slow day, someone else can smash it out of the park for you!

What's the difference between a team captain and a team member?

If taking part as a team, nominate a team captain and pick an awesome team name – all puns welcome!

Team captains lead the way, acting as a cheerleader for your team and encouraging friends, family and colleagues to get involved and making sure that the team's JustGiving page has been set up. They can also act as a representative for your team so if you need to get in touch with us at Future Steps HQ, your team captain will take on this responsibility and make sure that all members of the team know what to do and are able to fundraise.

Team members work together to make those steps count. Share your team's JustGiving page with everyone you know and keep your audience updated throughout the challenge to see those donations rolling in. When February begins, make sure to log your steps as you go along and check the app to see how your teammates are getting on.

How can I get my teammates to join my team?

Once you’ve nominated a team captain and picked an awesome team name, get your teammates to download the app and join your crew.

Team members can register for the event and join your team by selecting the ‘Team Member’ option on the Future Steps App registration page. They will then be taken to a list of teams and will need to find your team name within this list and confirm that they wish to join the team.

Too many in your team? Why not encourage others to start their own team for a bit of healthy competition?

How often will the leaderboard update?

The leaderboard is live and will update as you add steps and see those donations rolling in. Spark a bit of healthy competition and compete to be at the top of the Future Steps leaderboard by taking extra steps! Why not regularly share your progress in a bid to increase the likelihood of smashing your fundraising target? 

Can I see a company leaderboard on the app?

Yes you can! We know that many of you are taking part with your colleagues, so when you register your team, make sure you tell us which company you work for. This means that when you visit the leaderboard on the app, you can view how your team is doing compared to everyone else that's taking part, or just those in your company. We are sure that the internal leaderboard will definitely boost the competition!

We’re not just about the steps here at The Prince’s Trust – it's about raising the funds to help unemployed young people in 2022 as well, so our leaderboards will also rank teams on their fundraising success too!

How can I promote Future Steps throughout my company?

We’ve created some great resources to help you to really shout about Future Steps and to get as many of your employees involved as possible. Why not visit our online resources hub where you can download email signatures and social media posts to promote your challenge with all your colleagues? How do I register?

Registering for Future Steps is quick and simple - just download the app directly via the Apple App Store or Google Play to get started!

Is there a registration fee?

It's free to register for Future Steps, however, we do ask that participants do their best to fundraise £100 if taking part as an individual or £250 if taking part as a team. This will help us to support young people across the UK to reach their full potential and take their future steps.

I can't find my email confirming my participation in Future Steps, where has it gone?

Don’t worry if you didn’t receive your confirmation email welcoming you to the Future Steps.  Please do make sure to check your spam or junk email folders in case it's arrived there. 

If you still haven’t received your confirmation email or would just like to check that your registration has been received, please email futuresteps@princes-trust.org.uk.

Will I receive regular emails from The Prince's Trust?

Of course, we want to keep in touch! In the lead up to and throughout your challenge, we will be in contact regularly with any updates you need to know, so please make sure to read the emails. We’ll also give you some great tips on things like how to get in those extra steps, fundraising and staying safe whilst stepping!

You can tailor your communication preferences or unsubscribe at any time by using the link at the bottom of any email we send you. We do recommend that you turn on your app notifications though, so you know when you’ve hit your target!

How much do we need to raise? How will it be spent?

If you choose to compete as an individual, there is a fundraising target of £100, while for teams the fundraising target is £250. That’s a little over £3.50 per day or the price of a fancy coffee. 

Raise what you can knowing every pound makes a big difference!  

Here's just some of the ways your fundraising can support young people: 

  • £5 could pay towards an English qualification for one young person, unlocking unlimited potential.  

  • £10 could provide a young person with an employability mentor, empowering them to access life changing career opportunities. 

  • £20 could give two young people the chance to speak to our helpline and get critical advice they need in a time of real uncertainty.   

  • £30 could provide a young person with the vital gift of a mentor to provide guidance and support during this challenging time.  

  • £55 could give a young person a face-to-face hour-long session with a youth worker building their confidence, resilience, and motivation during this challenging time.   

How do I set up a fundraising page?

The easiest way to fundraise for Future Steps is to use a JustGiving page. Set up your fundraising page in the Future Steps app to automatically claim your place on the leaderboard. The app will prompt the fundraising page creation during registration. 

Created a Future Steps 2022 JustGiving page outside of the app? Make sure to sync your page to the Future Steps App. 

If you are a team captain, make sure you have set up the fundraising page for your team and have shared it with your team members.

Make your page as interesting as possible by adding photos and videos and letting everyone know why you’re raising money for young people through participating in Future Steps. Share your page on Facebook, Instagram & Twitter and email it to your friends and family. More and more donations are being made via social media, so be sure to share a link to your page! You can download our social media assets to help you post about the challenge.

Don’t forget, you can also use the JustGiving app on your iPhone or Android to update your page. You can also use this handy fundraising checklist to make sure you have everything covered.

Can I raise sponsorship using another online provider?

We recommend using JustGiving as it is compatible with our Future Steps app and will mean that you can see how you’re doing in comparison to other participants. Fundraising through JustGiving pages will also contribute to the overall fundraising total that is displayed on the app. Since its launch in 2000, over £5 billion has been raised for charity on JustGiving.  The site makes online fundraising simple, fast, effective, and fun.

We do know that you may have to use another platform, due to your workplace or to gain match-funding. If that’s the case, just let us know by emailing futuresteps@princes-trust.org.uk and telling us your team name and company name if you’re taking part through work.

Do I have to fundraise online?

Your online fundraising page is the quickest and easiest way to get donations from friends and family without any money changing hands. It also means you don’t have to worry about sending us donations as your online giving will be directly transferred to us. Platforms like JustGiving, also give you the opportunity to add Gift Aid to help boost your fundraising.

You can fundraise offline if you prefer, but please do let us know so we can ensure that we recognise your fundraising efforts and can give you some tailored tips.

Will you give advice on how to fundraise?

We are here to help you fundraise every step of the way. We will support you by including fundraising tips and ideas in our communications, so look out for them landing in your inbox.
