Alex Smillie and Alan Blong, Delta Rising Star Award finalists, were treated to a private tour of Heathrow Airport to congratulate them on their achievements.

The Prince's Trust and Samsung Celebrate Success Awards honour the achievements of young people supported by The Trust. These young people have succeeded against the odds, improved their chances in life and had a positive impact on their local community.

Delta Air Lines sponsor the Celebrate Success Rising Star award category. The Rising Star Award recognises young people who, despite having faced substantial personal obstacles, are in sustainable employment as a result of one of our programmes.

After attending the London and South East regional finals for the Celebrate Success Awards, we were overwhelmed by the stories of all the finalists and wanted to acknowledge the achievements of the Rising Star nominees. Once I realised how much of an aviation enthusiast Alex Smilli‎e was, it inspired me to organise the Delta TechOps VIP day at the airport.

On Friday 4th March, our London and South East Rising Star Award finalists, Alex Smillie and Alan Blong, spent the day at Heathrow Airport. To kick start the day, Delta treated our young people to breakfast before taking them through to explore the technical hub. Alex and Alan were fascinated by the technical hub, and they couldn’t believe there were so many spare parts for an aero plane.

After checking out the technical hub, Alex and Alan were taken across the other side of the airport to visit the Heathrow Airport control tower viewing platform. The sights were truly spectacular; it was fantastic watching all the aeroplanes taking off and landing and seeing views of Windsor Castle in the far distance.

After taking in the sights of West London, Alex and Alan were taken to a Delta Air Lines aeroplane, where they were able to explore exclusive parts of the aeroplane. Alex and Alan pretended to be pilots for the day, as they learnt about the functions of the different buttons and switches in the cockpit.

After tucking into a feast, laid on by Delta Air Lines, it was time to head home. It was a truly sensational day, both for the young people and the staff at Delta Air Lines – everybody had a really great time.

We asked Delta Air Lines what they enjoyed the most about the trip:

The tour went really well and it was great to see the smiles on everyone’s faces throughout the day. It was a great feeling to be able to give something back to the local community.

Delta Air Lines employees have strong core values and being able to celebrate Alex and Alan’s achievements is something we feel passionate about.

We are proud to be associated with The Prince’s Trust and are looking at other ways we can join forces to help more young people.

We’d like to say a big thank you to Delta Air Lines for hosting this wonderful trip for our young people, it was a real once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and we are very grateful to all the staff who went above and beyond on the day to make sure they had a brilliant time.
