This year’s report highlights the "devasting toll" that covid-19 has had on the lives of 16-25 year olds and their mental wellbeing. Amid the throes of a global pandemic, young people, particularly those not in education, training or employment are concerned about not being able to find a career as well as increased competition in the job market. However, young people are more determined than ever to strive for a brighter and more secure future with 78% hopeful for a better year ahead.
The 2021 Prince’s Trust Tesco Youth Index, conducted by YouGov, gauges the happiness and confidence levels of young people across a range of areas – from working life to both physical and mental health.
This year’s Youth Index, which surveyed 2,180 16-25 year olds from across the UK, reveals:
- 60% of young people say that getting a new job feels "impossible now" because there is so much competition
- a quarter (24%) of young people claim that the pandemic has "destroyed" their career aspirations
- Young people state that they are more likely to feel anxious now than at any other time since the Youth Index was first launched over a decade ago
