Nominated for our Mentor of the Year Award in association with Good Morning Britain, Ryan's help has been invaluable to the young people he mentors, providing support to others who are in the position he once was.

After completing The Prince’s Trust Get into programme with Marks & Spencer, Ryan successfully gained employment and a place on the M&S Management Programme, where he is now a store section manager. Ryan’s help has been invaluable to the young people he mentors, providing support to others who are in the position he once was.

When Ryan was 14 his father died, hugely impacting the family. Before Ryan was able to finish his education, he left school prematurely to try and save his father’s business, however the stress of running it, missing his friends and struggling to deal with the loss of his father meant that Ryan fell into a period of depression, contemplating taking his own life.

At just 22, with the family business struggling, Ryan made himself redundant and attempted to get his own business off the ground. When planning permission was rejected, Ryan finally collapsed under the pressure entering a spiral of despair and was left with a feeling that he would not achieve anything in life.

At his lowest point, Ryan was referred to The Prince’s Trust Get into programme with Marks & Spencer. His potential was evident from the outset and he excelled on the programme, successfully gaining employment and a place on the M&S Management Programme, where he is now a store section manager.

Ryan’s success has come full circle as he also continued working with The Trust as a Mentor, both on the M&S programme that gave him his start and as a progression mentor for other young people who are in the position he once was.

Ryan’s help has been invaluable to the young people he mentors and being able to offer that support has given him a great sense of pride.

Ryan said:

I learnt the hard way that sometimes all you need is someone to believe in you and give you some practical support and encouragement. Making a difference to other young people’s lives just by sharing my own experience, skills and knowledge is a hugely rewarding way to repay a little of the faith people had in me.
