My introduction to the Prince’s Trust was through a 5 week health and social care course focussed on improving my subject specific skills and overall employability. This was called ‘Get into Health and Social Care.’ I learnt some top tips on how to perfect my CV and cover letters and got my Level 1 Prepare to work in Adult Social Care Qualification. It was really interesting to hear from people who actually worked in the sector and I learnt a lot during this time.

After my course had finished, I heard about the opportunity to apply for the Health and Social Care Youth Committee through an email from my Prince’s Trust Executive. It seemed like a great opportunity to help make course even better for young people! I was thrilled to find out I had been accepted onto the committee and I was excited to get started.

At first, we did a virtual training bootcamp, this was a great opportunity to polish up my skills in communication, confidence, resilience and working as a team. Then it was time to get stuck in. We drafted up a Term of Reference and decided what we wanted to focus on, we picked three main areas, communications, mentoring and peer research.

There were loads of opportunities for us to get involved in, but I chose to help select the mental health support service for young people on Prince’s Trust programmes through a tender process. As well as choosing to help interview future Prince’s Trust Executives- these are two experiences I found particularly valuable, and I found learning about the processes within the Prince’s Trust really interesting.

As a group we decided we would like to hear from other young people, other than ourselves, to broaden our understanding of the experiences available within the Prince’s Trust. Therefore, we decided to hear from young people directly by asking them a series of questions in some arranged focus groups. We have run 3 focus groups so far, and from this we have learnt that most young people asked have had a really positive experience of the Prince’s Trust Health and Social Care Courses, and feel that these opportunities have helped them find employment. We have also found out that there are many different ways in which young people in 2021 want to hear information. We are planning this data in more depth soon, so we look forward to sharing that with you.

For our next project, we hope to make a mini documentary to share with you all. This will highlight our own experiences of being on the Prince’s Trust Health and Social Care Committee and participating in the Health and Social Care programme initially.

I have really enjoyed my time on the committee so far, and I really feel I have developed my confidence and skills, that will help me in my future career. I would really encourage anyone to get involved in this committee in the future and it has been one of many highlights of my Prince’s Trust journey.
