After receiving business start-up support from The Prince’s Trust in Scotland, Melissa is now the proud owner of Macs Glasgow, a hair and beauty salon in the city.

However, the road to self-employment wasn’t always easy. Melissa always had a passion for hair and beauty, but a lack of time in the field was a real barrier to getting a job. While working between temporary jobs, she was struck with a life-threatening meningitis infection, which resulted in ongoing health problems.

"Whenever I went for job interviews and they asked about days off - I'd have had 20 to 30 days off in the past year. I was made redundant three times in one year. It was just because I was unwell."

It was from her hospital bed that Melissa decided that life was too short not to go after her life-long dream of setting up her own salon. Determined to change her life, she Googled 'help for young people in Scotland' and The Prince’s Trust came up.

"I phoned up The Prince’s Trust and they invited me on the Enterprise programme. I learned all about doing tax, bookkeeping and marketing. I got to see my strengths and what I could do. I didn't really know how capable I was until I completed it."

When I finished the course and I was on a mission! I thought I'm going to do this and I've got to do it now or I never will.

We supported Melissa to learn about the world of business from bookkeeping to sales and marketing. She also received a grant to buy her first products.

"Without the help of The Prince’s Trust, I wouldn’t be where I am today. They helped me start up my business, Macs Glasgow, after being unwell. The support I have received from them has been amazing, I highly recommend them to any young person who is thinking of setting up their own business."

Fast forward to today and Melissa’s business is booming. She has gone from a mobile business in 2011 to now running a ‘vintage chic’ salon, with two employees. Her award-winning salon is widely known as the first salon in Scotland to be approved to supply and fit the celebrity favourite Easilocks hair extensions.

The best bit of advice I got came from the Prince's Trust and it was never give up. If I look back I wouldn't do anything differently. I've made mistakes but you learn from them.
