Gemma's Gap story
Wanting to take on a new challenge, Gemma didn't know where to start - until she heard about a retail programme being delivered by The Prince's Trust and Gap.
"I found out about The Prince's Trust when I was looking for work at the Job Centre. I felt ready and determined to do something but I didn't know how to start. They supported me to explore so many options, and as I wanted to work in retail, they urged me to take part in the Gap programme.
"I really enjoyed it and everyone was so friendly and approachable! They helped us so much and encouraged us to try new things. It always felt like we had a choice and they took us at our own pace.
"The first part of the course involved activities for us to boost our skills, update our CV & prepare for interviews. Then we put our skills into practice by completing placements in store which I loved.
"At first I was so nervous but everyone was so welcoming and smiley, I wanted to be part of the team instantly. There was never a day when it wasn't enjoyable and I couldn't wait to go back each day and do more!
"All the staff really are so supportive! They are a second family to me. There's a number of us here who started our journey with The Prince's Trust and it has been great to learn from them as they’ve shown us the ropes! Now when new people start in store who might be feeling like I did and a bit nervous, I love reassuring them and supporting them too. I couldn't be happier to be here!
