Our Development Awards programme, supported by Cashback for Communities, is a cash grant that knocks down financial barriers to help young people achieve their goals.

Taking steps into training and education is an exciting time but it can be expensive, particularly for those who lack financial support at home. That is where our Development Awards come in. We offer up to £500 to cover course fees, travel to work, new equipment –  anything that will give a helping hand for a young person to succeed.

Success Story: Young People Reach ‘Higher Grounds’

Teachers, parents and pupils at Auchenharvie Academy are now able to kick-start their morning with a freshly brewed coffee thanks to 'Higher Grounds', a new cofffee cart set up by an S4 class.

The group of 10 students from the North Ayrshire school came up with the idea to help improve their confidence, customer service and employability skills. They secured funding from the Development Awards programme to get training and barista qualifications from Ayrshire College. While partners at Developing Young Workforce Ayrshire supported them to create a fully equipped barista facility.

Launched in March (2017)' Higher Grounds' is already in high demand from staff and pupils, with future plans for the coffee cart to be used school events such as parents' nights.

Kai Dickson, a pupil at Auchenharvie Academy, says:

The barista training has given me the confidence to work as part of a team and communicate effectively with customers of all types. I feel prepared to work in the hospitality industry now that I have my customer service, first aid at work and City & Guilds Barista qualifications. Working on the Higher Grounds Coffee Bar has been one of my favourite experiences at Auchenharvie Academy.
