His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales today visited TK Maxx in Tooting, South London to meet with young people who gained employment with the retailer through the Prince’s Trust Get into Retail programme.

The Prince’s Trust Founder and President met with young TK Maxx employees to hear how The Trust’s Get Into programme has impacted their lives. Many had been long term unemployed before they took part in the programme and have overcome considerable barriers to gain stable jobs.

TK Maxx has been a partner of The Prince’s Trust since 2013 and is one of The Trust’s largest delivery partners of the Get into Retail programme. It also works with The Trust to support young people from an offending background into work.

Recent research from The Prince’s Trust found 48 per cent of employers agree they need to be more innovative in their recruitment, as traditional practices are no longer working. Nearly half of young people applying for jobs also feel they have missed out on roles because they were not given a chance to show their skills properly (48 per cent).

The Prince’s Trust’s Get Into programme offers an alternative method of recruitment across multiple sectors. It is a two to six-week course that develops young people’s confidence and sector-specific skills to support them into jobs in a range of industries. Three in four young people supported by The Trust move into work, education or training.

Dame Martina Milburn, Group Chief Executive of The Prince’s Trust said: “Our programmes are designed to support young people, no matter their circumstances or past, develop confidence, skills and self-esteem.

“Many of the young people met today have been employed by TK Maxx for many years after completing the Trust’s Get into Retail course. This is a testament to the success of our partnership, which does so much for young people across the country.”

Louise Greenlees, President of TJX Europe said: “It has been an honour to welcome HRH The Prince of Wales to our TK Maxx store in Tooting and introduce him to young people we are proud to have in our team.

“Through the Get into Retail programme with The Prince’s Trust, we are delighted to be able to give these young people the opportunity to change their futures for the better.”

John Lochrie, Prince’s Trust supported TK Maxx Employee added: “I felt my confidence grow. I was excited to be offered a permanent position and from day one I have enjoyed working at the TK Maxx store, it makes me want to work hard and succeed in my job.

“The Prince’s Trust and TK Maxx have made me who I am today. I feel determined to keep learning and taking on new challenges, and am looking forward to the future.”

Since the partnership began, it has helped over 1,000 young people through the Get into Retail programme, with many going on to full and part time employment at TK Maxx or Homesense.
