The Prince's Trust joined forces with Park Plaza last week to host a record-breaking Get Hired event at the hotel group’s Westminster Bridge venue.
The youth unemployment rate in London is currently at 13.5% and Get Hired is our latest initiative that aims to reduce that figure, bringing local businesses together with talented young people to support them into employment in a ‘speed dating’ style setting. By bridging the gap between businesses looking for a low-cost, time efficient recruitment process and young people who are ready to move into work, but struggling to access the right opportunities, it's a match made in heaven.
This event was the largest ever of its kind, with more than 80 young people in attendance. They started the day with a high energy, interactive session delivered by Leap, a professional leadership and coaching organisation, to help boost their confidence and explore their inner leader.
Following this, corporate volunteers from Deloitte and NatWest facilitated a workshop where they practised interview techniques and provided invaluable feedback to prepare the young people for meeting with employers for real-life interviews in the afternoon.
Chief executive Nick Stace also offered the audience his own words of advice and introduced the 17 businesses looking to recruit on the day. These businesses then delivered their 60-second pitches to promote their opportunities to the young people and whip up a healthy spirit of competition to attract the best candidates.
Celebrity Ambassadors Tom and Giovanna Fletcher also came along to the event and fully participated in the day before vlogging about their experiences to their YouTube followers. Listen to what Tom and Giovanna had to say here.
Get Hired is run by The Prince’s Trust and supported nationally by Standard Life. Launching in London, the programme has facilitated more than 4,500 interviews and introduced nearly 350 small businesses to a pool of over 2,000 potential recruits over three years. Up to 65% of these young people have successfully secured a positive outcome. Following the success of Get Hired in London, the programme is now being rolled out nationally.
