In less than six years, Trust supporters Cunard have raised £1 million to help The Prince’s Trust turn around the lives of disadvantaged young people across the UK.
The celebrations on board Queen Victoria were particularly fitting, for it was when HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, accompanied by HRH The Prince of Wales, named that ship on 10th December 2007 that the company launched its association with The Prince’s Trust.
A number of Prince’s Trust Ambassadors were in attendance for the celebrations, including Joan Aramatrading, Jon Sopel, Robert Powell and Sue cook. Prince’s Trust Ambassadors Blake, the classical crossover group, performed for guests on board the ship.
Over the past six years, Cunard's ships have seen various fundraising activities taking place. Onboard activities have included the auctioning of the voyage nautical map at the end of each cruise, raising money from guest donations (including foreign coin donations) and proceeds from the World Cruise Charities being assigned to The Prince’s Trust.
Fundraising activities have taken place on shore as well, including promotion of Cunard’s Ship Visits programme, the donation of Cunard cruises to auction at high-profile Prince’s Trust events, dedicated Prince’s Trust voyages and events, annual ‘Week for the Trust’ fundraising activities in Carnival House and participation in the yearly Palace to Palace bike rides have all contributed to the £1 million raised.
Cunard and Carnival UK have also offered practical support to The Prince’s Trust with work placements and HR support – the most recent being in December 2012 when four departments at the offices of Cunard and its parent company, Carnival UK, delivered a Prince’s Trust Get into Customer Service programme. The programme gave 12 unemployed young people aged 16-23 the skills and confidence to find a job. After they completed the programme the young people attended an event on board Queen Victoria where they met HRH The Duchess of Cornwall and were presented with a certificate.
Angus Struthers, Cunard’s Marketing Director, says:
"However, special thanks and mention must go to Cristina Munoz, Cunard’s Partnership and Events Manager, who has co-ordinated all of the activities and it is her drive and determination which has kept the team focussed and determined to achieve £1 million. Thank you and congratulations Cristina!"
Martina Milburn, chief executive of The Prince’s Trust, said: "With youth unemployment still affecting hundreds of thousands of young people in the UK, it has never been more important to support those who are furthest from finding work.
