Idris Elba is a DJ, director and Golden Globe winning actor known for his TV roles in The Wire and Luther as well as Hollywood blockbusters like Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and Thor.
Before Idris was an international star he was supported by The Trust, which gave him a £1,500 grant to be able to train as an actor with the National Youth Music Theatre.
Having grown up on an estate in Hackney, North London, he was surrounded by gang culture, crime and poverty but was determined to follow his dreams.
Idris now works closely with The Trust, helping to raise awareness of the challenges faced by young people today and using his own personal experience to support young people fulfil their potential.
Idris speaks passionately at Trust events and has spent time meeting young people who are working towards their goals with Trust support. You can see one of these meetings in our short film: Idris Elba meets Dante.
