Next Steps Mentor
As a mentor you'll encourage and assist a
young person to plan and take steps towards achieving their
personal goals- helping them on towards employment, training or
education opportunities.
About the role
For The Prince’s Trust, mentoring is “The provision of personal
support, assistance, encouragement and inspiration to young people
during and following our programmes, particularly at a time of
transition and typically over a sustained period of time.”
Next Step Mentors provide mentoring support to
young people for 12 months after they have completed an Enterprise programme. Some have one meeting and
decide not to proceed further while others have a series of
meetings and progress their plans. It is generally a small
proportion of those who attend a course that progress through to
achieve business mentor support and lending from the Trust.
Most will have 3 or 4 meetings; many will not
complete their business plan; a few will go on to start successful
businesses.
A next steps mentor is non-judgmental. We help
shape the young persons ideas and act as a sounding board. We ask
questions that they may not have considered. We bring experience
and knowledge that they may not have had access to previously. We
shape, develop and enhance their ideas, but they remain their
ideas.
