Unemployed

  • Job Centre Plus

Build relationships with your Local Partnerships Manager and District Marketing Manager who host jobs fairs, employer open days and information and advice days for different client groups.

Nextstep is the brand name for local face-to-face information and advice services funded by the Learning and Skills Council. Nextstep can help young people identify their skills, provide help with basic skills and signpost to relevant support services.

Advanced Apprenticeships in construction-related fields, including electrical plant reconditioning, and work-based training programmes for 16-24 yr olds. Takes up to four years to complete whilst in full-time employment with a local company.

Why not learn and earn? The Service offers information on all aspects of apprenticeships and advertises vacancies. Alternatively, read up and encourage your employer to become an apprenticeship supplier.

Supports people into work by providing free training, computer access, telephone access, stationary, etc. Can help decide what training you need and help you get it, whether to brush up reading and writing or to become familiar with computers.

  • Olympics – Personal Best

Programme offering an entry qualification in volunteering, a guaranteed interview to be a London 2012 volunteer and the skills needed to enter employment. A great opportunity for those who want to work but aren’t quite ready. Open to unemployed people in Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham, Greenwich, South Bromley, Waltham Forest, Haringey, Westminster, Lambeth or Southwark.

Each borough has a volunteer centre which will advertise local opportunities.

  • Local Councils

Local councils advertise jobs on their own websites (usually borough.gov.uk) and can include traineeships or work placements.

  • Direct contact

Writing directly to or visiting local companies asking for work experience can pay off.

Community Project Funding

  • Awards For All

Grants of between £500 and £5,000 for local communities in the UK running projects that enable people to take part in art, sport, heritage or community activities, or promote education, the environment or health in the local community.

Make Your Mark is the national enterprise campaign inspiring young people to make their business or social enterprise ideas happen. On this site you can ask questions, share advice, make contacts and find networking groups or local events.

Educational Underachievers

There are hundreds of charitable organisations to which young people can apply for grants to support them in education which they cannot otherwise afford; the sources below hold extensive databases. Eligibility guidelines vary by grant.

  • Careers Advice

Information on paying for courses, helping with childcare costs, how to choose the right type of course and many other areas.

  • Childcare Affordability Programme

Childcare costs can be a key barrier to finding work; this programme provides help and advice to parents on low pay.

  • Educational Grants Advisory Service (EGAS)

EGAS provides comprehensive advice and information on sources of funding available for post-16 education and training including loans, grants, benefits, access funds, hardship funds, bursaries and charitable trusts. It also lists lots of other helpful info.

  • National Care Advisory Service

National advice, support and development service for children in and from care (age 13-25) and for those who work with them.

  • Action for Children

Supports vulnerable children and young people in the UK. The charity helps to find carers, through adoption and fostering schemes, for children and young people who cannot live with their families.

Offenders /Ex-Offenders

  • National Probation Service

The Probation Service works with other criminal justice services, including the police and prisons to assist offenders in completing a community sentence and in reconnecting with their local community. Find out your local probation service and build relationships with local probation officers.

  • Youth Offending Teams (YOTs)

There are YOTs in every local authority in England and Wales. They are made up of representatives from the police, Probation Service, social services, health, education, drugs and alcohol misuse and housing officers. Each YOT is managed by a YOT manager who is responsible for co-ordinating the work of the youth justice services.

  • Youth Inclusion Programmes (YIPs)

YIPs target young people in the community who are most at risk of offending. Senior YIPs work with young people aged 13-17. Young people on the YIP are identified through a number of different agencies, including the local YOT, police, children and family services, local education authorities or schools, neighbourhood wardens and anti-social behaviour teams.

  • Police Community Support Service

Local Police Community Support Officers hold regular P.A.C.T (Police and Communities Together) meetings as part of Neighbourhood Policing activities. Community members attend P.A.C.T meetings, chaired by local PCSOs, in order to discuss and find solutions to local issues.

  • SOVA (Supporting Others through Voluntary Action)

Voluntary mentoring organisation in England and Wales working in the Criminal Justice Sector and young people on youth offending orders as well as care leavers, long-term unemployed and refugee and asylum seekers.

  • YMCA Partnerships in Prisons

YMCA work in partnership with prisons and probation services to support young offenders with citizenship and training opportunities pre-release.

  • Gingerbread

Gingerbread is a national network of local support groups run by and for lone parents. Gingerbread also runs a national advice line for lone parents.

Refugees/Asylum Seekers

  • Refugee Council

The Refugee Council is the largest organisation in the UK working with asylum seekers and refugees. The Council not only gives direct help and support, but also works with asylum seekers and refugees to ensure their needs and concerns are addressed.

Supported Housing

  • Foyer

A national foyer network supports young homeless people aged 16-25 into safe and secure accommodation and training and provides personal development support. The Foyer Federation also works in partnership with Probation Services to support young offenders.

  • YMCA

YMCA provides housing and advice for the homeless. The organisation is also involved in training for the unemployed, counselling and other branches of community work.

  • DePaul UK

DePaul UK is the UK’s largest charity for young homeless people. The charity provides pre- and post-release mentoring services and hostel accommodation and resettlement support for young offenders.

  • Shelter

Shelter is a national charity providing advice and guidance to people who are facing all kinds of housing problems.

  • Crisis

Crisis is the national organisation for homeless people. Crisis offers a housing service, an employment service to help homeless people back into meaningful and sustainable employment and other well-known support services, such as Crisis Christmas and Crisis Skylight.

  • Local Authority housing department

Find out about the public services that your local council provides. Build relationships with your local authority in order to ensure effective referral links. In particular, link up with your local Council Housing department which provides information on housing benefits, sheltered housing services and advice for the homeless.
