Five Key Messages for Volunteers (Three of them need an action!)

1. New Head of Programmes – Enterprise, Awards and Volunteers

We are very sad to said farewell to Steve Marsh who has left The Trust after nine years to become the Chief Officer at Scarborough’s YMCA – an organisation he has been part of as a volunteer and Trustee for over twenty years. As many of you will know, Steve was a significant part of the Enterprise (formally Business) Programme in the region and has played a big part in the programme development in recent years.

As Steve’s replacement we welcome Chris Peake in to the Head of Programmes role. Chris has been with The Trust for several years and has most recently worked on developing our Get Into and Get Started programmes within the region and has taken Get Into to the stage where it delivers quality provision to hundreds of young people each year. Chris will no doubt make contact with you all soon and will be meeting with many of you as he gets around the various programmes in the coming months.

2. Volunteer Expenses

I am pleased to say that The Trust has increased the volunteer business mileage rate from 20p to 25p per mile with retrospective effect from 1st April 2011. Current data shows that the costs associated with running a car; fuel, servicing, insurance, tax and breakdown cover is just over 22p per mile. The guidelines for claiming volunteer expenses remains the same.

3. Volunteer Recruitment

ACTION NEEDED! As reported back in November, volunteering activity and opportunities are growing significantly in the Yorkshire and Humber region. We need to make sure we continue to recruit, train and deploy sufficient good volunteers to support the increasing number of young people who need our help. Can you please take another look at your networks, friends and family and encourage people you know, who may be interested in volunteering for The Trust, to get in touch. We have some fantastic volunteering roles on offer. We very much need;

Outreach Volunteers will also signpost eligible young people towards Prince’s Trust programmes – HIGH PRIORITY – currently in Hull centre and Sheffield centre but likely to start in other key locations

Other volunteering roles are available.

Potential volunteers can contact me directly on 07506 692197 for an informal chat about volunteering or email louise.kendall@princes-trust.org.uk to request an information/application pack.

4. Volunteer Engagement

ACTION NEEDED! Recruiting new volunteers is very important to The Trust, but making sure that a volunteer is then being fully utilised is equally important. I want to make sure that every one of our 330+ front-line volunteers is kept as busy as their availability and expectation allows. We fully understand that there are times when a volunteer’s work or private life means that volunteering time is reduced or put on hold for a while. We also understand that The Trust occasionally experiences reduced demand for a particular volunteer role. However, can you please contact me directly if you feel your time as a volunteer is not being fully utilised or get in touch with your main volunteer contact (Emmie, Sue, Les or Richard) if you prefer.

5. Job Vacancies

ACTION NEEDED! In 11/12, The Trust in Yorkshire and Humber will be supporting more young people than ever before and to help us do this we are recruiting a Programme Executive – Get Into and a Programme Executive – Get Started. We are also recruiting a Fundraising Manager (Public Sector) and a Programme Manager - Enterprise. Details of these jobs can be found on our website http://www.princes-trust.org.uk/about_the_trust/vacancies.aspx or you can call me on 07506 692197 for more information. Can you please pass these opportunities on to your friends, families and networks or feel free to apply yourself!

If you have any questions or comments on this message or any other topic, please contact me directly.

Thank you very much for everything you do to support our young people.
