The Isle of Wight FRS involved with 'Get Into'
programme.
Claire Heath, 22, shares her experience of the
'Get Into Maritime' Prince's Trust programe.
"The five days I spent at UK Sailing
Academy on the Isle of Wight were an all round brilliant
experience. I’ve been out of work for the last four months and
was starting to get upset and self doubting that I couldn’t find
work, so when I found the flyer for 'Get into Maritime' programme
at the job centre things started looking up.
I checked out the Princes Trust website as I
hadn’t heard of it before. I realised how much they had to offer to
young people and felt lucky to be getting the chance to participate
on such a good and helpful course.
I’ve always loved the water so knew I would
take full advantage of what the course had to offer and was excited
to put all my energy and efforts into it to show my
appreciation.
I thought all the course leaders were really
friendly and just as happy to be on the course. One of the leaders
was Phil Selby from the Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service.
Phil got fully involved with all the activities even if he did
cheat at playing water polo! He was really helpful and made
everyone feel comfortable on the course whilst being there to talk
to and hear stories of past events he had helped out with.
I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to do the
course and would like to thank everyone involved in making it
happen. I will be applying for more courses involved in maritime
and hopefully receive some funding to help me on my way as this is
just the beginning. I intend on getting employed as a water sports
instructor.
The 'Get into Maritime' course has made me
believe in myself and prove I can do anything when I put my mind to
it and am given the
chance."
