The Prince's Trust Team Huyton life-savers
The members of Merseyside Fire and Rescue
Service Team Huyton became life-savers when an elderly woman
collapsed at a Merseyside supermarket.
Mary
Crillack was at the checkout at the Tesco supermarket in Deysbrook
Lane when she had a cardiac arrest. Luckily The Prince’s Trust Team
who was carrying out a bag pack to raise funds for their Community
Project were on hand with their first aid trained Team Leaders.
Jane Cotter and Tony Canavan of Merseyside Fire
& Rescue Service gave cardiopulmonary resuscitation to Mary for
more than 10 minutes whilst they waited for paramedics.
The Team members worked together and directed members of the
public away to give Jane and Tony room to work.
Tony said:
We couldn’t have people crowding all around.
The Team directed people away from the tills and gave us loads of
room without being asked which was fantastic. We were doing chest
compressions for a long time. Mary died on us and we fought to get
her back three times.
By coincidence the Mary’s daughter and grandchildren were also
shopping in the store at the time she was taken ill. Warren
Richardson who is on the Team as part of the partnership between
The Prince’s Trust and Help for heroes, led her distraught daughter
and grandchildren away from the upsetting scene and helped to calm
them down.
Since the Team the incident Mary has made a full recovery and
since being released from hospital has made a request to meet up in
person with the team to thank them for their efforts in saving her
life. Mary says she will always be grateful to both the staff and
the Team members for looking after her.
