Case study - University Million Makers
In September 2008 two teams of second year
students from Leeds Trinity and All Saints University successfully
took on University Million Makers. How did they do it?
Two teams took on The Prince's Trust University Million Makers,
each setting up a successful business and making significant
profits for The Prince's Trust in just 12 weeks of trading. Amongst
other ideas, the group auctioned off a signed Hull City football
shirt, organised a football tournament, held raffles, sold items
online and did supermarket bag-packing.
Consultants Fergus Smith and Jackie Waite kept the team on
target and guided the students through the planning and
implementation of various enterprising activities. They also
encouraged them to improve their business knowledge and to
challenge themselves.
This challenge offered a wonderful development
opportunity for everyone. The Prince’s Trust gains much-needed
funds, the students gained immense experience that would enhance
their employability and the university saw major differences in
student maturity, concentration and self confidence. It is a
win-win proposition for all concerned.
– Fergus Smith
Working as part of a self-managing team
requires maturity, discipline, commitment and confidence and I was
impressed with how the students demonstrated this consistently
throughout the placement.
– Jackie Waite,
Business Mentor
Leeds Trinity and All Saints are especially
pleased to have undertaken a business enterprise scheme on behalf
of The Prince’s Trust. This is the second year of the scheme and
the students involved have gained a valuable insight into the
world of business and contributed to a thoroughly worthwhile
cause.
