Get into Construction

Working with construction industry leaders we have developed the Get into Construction – a two to four week work experience programme for young people aged 16-25.

What is Get into Construction?

Get into ConstructionWorking with construction industry leaders we have addressed the skills shortage currently faced by the industry, while seizing upon the unique opportunity that exists in the lead up to the 2012 Olympic Games in addition to the increasing health, education, transport and heritage sector projects across the UK. We have developed the Get into Construction – a two to four week work experience programme for young people aged 18-25.

The programme covers the following 5 main skills:

  • Carpentry
  • Joinery
  • Plastering
  • Brickwork
  • Painting and decorating

Those that excel within these programmes open themseleves up to being offered an apprenticeship to work towards obtaining a Construction Skills Certificate Scheme Card – a card that entitles them to work on a building site.

They will also get six months' support from a Prince's Trust advisor once they have completed the programme.

We believe the Get into Programmes provide a real opportunity to inspire young people to realise their potential and get started on the road to achieving their ambitions. The programmes enable us to make a positive difference to the lives of young people in the communities in which we work and ensure that people recognise the talented young people in their midst.

A practical idea

With the 2012 Olympics happening in London, the Cross Rail network project on track and a brand new Heathrow Terminal 2 taking off, the shortage of skilled construction workers is set to escalate.

Get into Construction & Business Services will impact positively on this shortage, and equip young people with the skills they need to progress into an apprenticeship and employment.

How to add more value

The continuation of the Get into Construction & Business Services Sectors programme relies on the funding from the members of the Construction & Business Services Leadership Group. The success of the programme also relies on the additional support that the member companies can provide.

As a member of the Leadership group where appropriate you can provide additional support to the young people that are on the Get into Construction & Business Services Sectors Programme. On a monthly basis you will receive the dates of future programmes and can add support in a number of different ways:

Supporting the Get into Construction Programme

  • Provide work placements for programme participants
  • Provide apprenticeships/ work opportunities for programme graduates
  • Provide an on-site introduction day for programme participants
  • Engage staff to support young people on the programme by presenting to them on the construction industry and employment opportunities
  • Motivate staff through UK & International Challenge Event participation and via the Team programme, Challenge 500 and Enterprise Project
  • Map company projects to programme locations to help young people find training or employment after the programme
  • Attend end of programme presentations with key staff and subcontractors

Award for Excellence

By adding extra support in at least one of the above categories, your company will receive a certificate signed by the Chief Executive of The Prince’s Trust that can be displayed in the reception area. This endorsement can also be used in materials produced by your company. It illustrates the significant contribution that has been made to increase the success of the group and the programme to support young people.
