What is Gift Aid?
Gift Aid allows us to claim an extra 25% from HM Revenue &
Customs (HMRC) on donations from individuals, at no extra cost to
you or your sponsors. This means that for every £1 you raise for
your Challenge, The Prince’s Trust can potentially claim 25p direct
from HMRC.
Who is eligible?
UK taxpayers (for the years beginning 6th April 2009 and 6th
April 2010) who have paid (or are going to pay) the government as
much in income tax or capital gains tax as The Prince's Trust are
claiming back (currently 25p for every £1 donated).
What do I need to do?
If your sponsors are donating online via your fundraising page
you don’t need to do anything! When collecting cash or cheque
donations, you and your sponsors must simply fill out the
Sponsorship Form as follows:
Your sponsors must:
- read the fine print on the Sponsorship Form
- complete all entries in their own handwriting
- give their full name and home address (at minimum an initial
and surname, and a house number and postcode)
- tick the ‘Gift Aid’ column
You must:
- fill in your full name, address and postcode at the top of
every Sponsorship Form
- send us the original Sponsorship & Gift Aid Form (no
photocopies, emails, faxes etc.)
Are there any donations which aren’t eligible?
Yes – donations must be eligible for Gift Aid as per HMRC
guidelines (visit www.hmrc.gov.uk for full details). Please take
the following exceptions into account when calculating how much
Gift Aid you are expecting.
Gift Aid cannot be claimed on:
- CAF donations
- Donations from companies
- Donations made by non-UK tax payers
- GAYE donations
- Illegible entries on Sponsorship Forms
