Sergeant Mike Brumskill
Below Sgt Brumskill
recalls some of the time he has spent working with young
people.
I have been a serving police officer with Merseyside Police for
the past 17 years, with a wide variety of policing experience
throughout the Merseyside Area. During my police career I have been
involved in and organised numerous diversionary activities for
young people. I successfully applied for a secondment to the
Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service to perform the role of
Prince’s Trust Team Leader at Huyton Fire Station. I volunteered
for the secondment because I was impressed with the quality of the
Prince’s Trust Team programme. I thought this would be an excellent
opportunity to help young people make positive lifestyle choices
and divert individuals away from criminal activity. I was
particularly impressed with the programme because it not only
facilitates personal development but also acts as a catalyst to
promote community cohesion.
My remit was to reduce crime and disorder by
positively engaging with ‘at risk’ young people, facilitating their
personal development and raising their self-esteem during each
course. Encouraging young people to get back into education,
training or employment was also seen as a priority. I was
originally contracted to run two teams but enjoyed the
experience so much I volunteered to be a Team Leader for
another two teams, thus extending my secondment.
