Darren Whiteley

After a bold move failed to work out, Darren decided that he wanted to set up his own business. Coupled with the support of The Prince's Trust, he set up a photography studio. With his unique approach to his work, he is doing very well and able to support his family.

Darren and his family emigrated to South Africa for what he thought would be a better life for his family and himself. However, it did not work out and after two years the family had to make the difficult decision to return to Wales. Once back home, Darren found himself back in Ystradgynlais with no job, no means of supporting his family and no prospects.

With unemployment high, Darren began to think about setting up his own business. Although he had an interest in photography, he had no experience of setting up a business, no idea of where to start, and no funding. When Darren first approached The Prince’s Trust, he had very little confidence and to him, the future looked bleak.

Darren was immediately supported by an Enterprise Executive who helped him to complete his initial business plan and other aspects of running a business. He began to see light at the end of the tunnel and was delighted when he received financial support from the Enterprise Programme.

Darren is now running a studio called New Age Photography producing family, children and expectant mums’ portraits. He has a unique approach, making everyone feel happy and relaxed which helps to encourage repeat business. His work provides an everlasting memento for parents.

Darren also does modern school photography, which in the last year has built from just having one school, to having several and is expanding everyday.

Although the business is in its infancy, Darren’s passion and drive are making it a success and business is growing steadily. Through The Prince’s Trust Enterprise Programme, Darren has learned practical and entrepreneurial skills to help him expand the business and make a living from it. Darren has a positive outlook and is happy to be able to support his family.
