Sound Horizons take on Raleigh assault course in aid of The Trust

Fundraisers from Plymouth have crawled through tunnels, scaled heights and waded through water at HMS Raleigh to raise money for the Prince's Trust.

Million Maker participants take on Rayleigh assault course.Three groups of six people accepted the challenge to tackle HMS Raleigh's assault course used as part of the nine week initial training course for new Royal Navy recruits. The teams were also given the opportunity to show off their marching skills on HMS Raleigh's parade ground and take part in a computerised shooting competition.

Representatives from the Land Registry, Plymouth City Council, the Devon Fire and Rescue Service and the South Western Ambulance Service Trust took part in the challenge. Royal Navy instructors were on hand to decide the overall winners, which was a team from the Land Registry.

Collectively the group, known as Sound Horizons, are taking part in the Prince's Trust Million Makers, UK enterprise challenge. They have set themselves a target of raising £20,000, which will go towards helping under privileged youths from the local area to attend development programmes. The 10-week development course builds self esteem, confidence and enables the attendees to gain a qualification. From this 70% of attendees either find employment or volunteer to enter formal education. The Raleigh event raised approximately £900 in sponsorship from the group's friends and families, which will be added to the £4,000 the team have already collected.

Sound Horizons group leader Shaun Davis, a fire station manager at Plympton, said: "This was a rare opportunity to come to a military establishment and have a go. The assault course was a challenge. Some of us are ex-military so it took us back to when we had to do this for a living. We are all fit and healthy, but you've got to take your hat off to the recruits who go round there, no doubt a lot faster than we did."

The Armed Forces has had a long standing partnership with The Trust, supporting initiatives that share a common aim to encourage the development of young people.
