Rebecca
Kerry
When Rebecca from Somerset was 15, she began
to suffer from mental health issues which led to her being
hospitalised.
For the next three years, her problems continued to affect her
life. Her anxiety about meeting new people increased to the point
where she didn’t go out anymore and she became very isolated and
vulnerable, becoming physically ill due to her poor living
conditions.
She desperately wanted to improve her life and be in a position
to work. When her mental health support worker referred her to The
Prince’s Trust, Rebecca signed up to the Team programme
immediately.
The Trust’s Team programme is a 12-week personal development
course, which gives unemployed young people the skills and
confidence to find work. Rebecca hoped that the scheme would
provide her with the support she needed to overcome her
anxiety.
With Rebecca’s background, she experienced high levels of stress
going into the programme. However, she continued with the course
and successfully completed every activity. Her commitment to each
task was an opportunity for her to realise that she could manage
her stress and take control of her life.
Once she understood this, Rebecca’s confidence began to flourish
and she started to learn valuable teamwork skills where she had
previously opted to work alone.
Since finishing the programme, Rebecca has been able to overcome
her anxiety issues. She has found better housing for herself and
re-entered education to complete her Level 2 Youth Work
qualification with the intention of securing a job in social care.
She has also secured a job working in hospitality to support
herself whilst studying.
Rebecca said:
Thanks to The Prince’s Trust, I feel so much
more hopeful about my life and my future. I am back in education
and working towards finding permanent work with young
people.
