Sky's the limit for Dundee teenager

Jodie Connell celebrated her 18th birthday in style – learning to fly a Grob Tutor aircraft with the Royal Air Force.

Team participant Jodie Connell preparing for takeoffJodie, of Claverhouse, Dundee, joined Flight Lieutenant Lindsay Brown for a morning at East of Scotland Universities Air Squadron, RAF Leuchars, learning first-hand about the equipment used by the RAF before taking to the skies and being shown how to fly the plane.

The teenager was chosen by The Prince’s Trust Scotland for the experience following her success on the Team programme at Dundee College.

Team leader at Dundee College, Linda Guthrie added: “Jodie was outstanding during her time on the course, she excelled through her team work, leadership skills and in caring for others. The sky is literally the limit for her now.”

The Prince’s Trust’s programme has given me a whole new perspective on life and I feel extremely lucky to have spent this time with the RAF and finding out more about their work. The flight was absolutely amazing and it felt brilliant to be up in the clouds. This is definitely a great way to mark my 18th birthday.

The RAF is committed to supporting The Prince’s Trust by offering such incentives to a select number of young people each year and there will be a number of opportunities available across the UK for this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Squadron Leader Lewis Gusterson, Officer Commanding East of Scotland Universities Air Squadron at RAF Leuchars, said:

“It is a great pleasure to host Jodie on the squadron and the personnel of RAF Leuchars is delighted to support the outstanding work carried out by The Prince’s Trust in Scotland. ”
