Fairbridge team takes on Three Peaks challenge
A team of Salford Centre members and
supporters from Pizza Express took on the Three Peaks of Scotland,
England and Wales, completing the 24 miles in 24 hours.
The challenge began in May 2011, when a team made up of Salford
Centre members and the HR and training team from Pizza Express,
decided to climb 2,142 metres up the peaks of Pen-Y-Guent,
Whernside and Ingleborough.
The team raised a fantastic £4,000 in
sponsorship. Memories of blisters, temper tantrums and eating their
own weight in Haribo and Mars bars will fade, but memories of their
monumental sense of achievement and pride in what they achieved
will remain for much longer.
However, conquering the 'Three Peaks' of the beautiful
Yorkshire countryside in 12 hours wasn't enough for the team. They
decided to go one step further, and take on the Three Peaks of
Scotland, England and Wales within a target time of 24 hours.
July 2nd was the date that the team got their walking boots on
again to complete their second challenge - 24 miles in 24
hours. This time they were accompanied by Stephen Rookes and Mike
Wallace of NES, Hugh Orr and Chris Swire; all brave and dedicated
supporters of Fairbridge.
Starting in Scotland, they scaled the 1,344 metres of Ben Nevis,
before moving onto Scafell Pike in Cumbria (978 metres) where they
took a few minutes to watch the sun rise at 4.30am. Wales was their
final destination, and they hiked 1,085 metres up Snowden to
complete their challenge.
Mike Wallace of NES said,
It's a tough event, not only have you got to
climb the highest mountain in each country, you have to do so in
approximately half the time that most people would complete such a
climb. We had a great support team from Fairbridge who made
sure we were suitably fed and watered before and after each
climb.
A huge amount of respect, and a massive thank you goes out to
all the walkers from the Fairbridge team.
